AEO For Contractors

What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and Why Does It Matter for Contractors?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your online presence so AI tools name your business when someone asks them for a recommendation.

Traditional SEO decides where you rank in a list of links. AEO decides whether you're the answer given before that list ever appears. When a homeowner opens ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, or Meta AI and asks who they should hire, the AI returns two or three names. Those businesses get the calls. Everyone else may as well not exist for that query.

It's the same distinction as being recommended by a friend versus being one of ten names in a directory. The recommendation carries a trust the list never does — which is why AI-referred visitors tend to arrive already convinced, rather than still comparing.

Does AEO Replace SEO?

No — and any agency telling you it does is selling you a rebrand.

AEO builds on top of SEO. The signals that make an AI confident enough to name your business are largely the same ones that make Google rank you: clear content, consistent business information, third-party mentions, and reviews. If you've invested in SEO, you're already partway there.

The genuine differences are narrower than the hype suggests. Content needs to answer questions directly rather than burying the point. Your business needs to be unmistakably categorizable — a model has to be able to say what you do and who you serve in one line before it will risk recommending you. And reviews carry more weight in AI recommendations than they do in traditional rankings.

That's the real delta. Anyone charging you for a separate discipline is charging you twice for work that overlaps.

Why Should Contractors Care About AEO Right Now?

Because the businesses named today are building a position that gets harder to displace every month.

Ranking on Google does not guarantee you appear in AI answers — they pull from different sources and weigh them differently. Industry testing has repeatedly found that a large share of contractors ranking well on Google are entirely absent from ChatGPT's recommendations. Those are businesses winning the old game and invisible in the new one, usually without knowing it.

Number one on google
Ai Recommend Contractor

For a remodeling or painting contractor, the practical stakes are simple. A homeowner planning a kitchen renovation asks an AI which companies to consider. Three names come back. If yours isn't among them, you were never in the running — and unlike a Google result you can outrank next quarter, you can't buy your way into an AI recommendation.

The honest caveat, since most pages on this topic won't give you one: AI referral traffic is still a small share of total traffic for most businesses. This is not yet replacing your search or ad channels. What it is, right now, is disproportionately high-quality traffic in a lane with far less competition than search — and a position that compounds while your competitors are still deciding whether it's real.

How Do We Know AEO Actually Works?

Because we did it to ourselves first, and we can show you what happened.

Two years ago, searching our own company name on Google returned nothing. We didn't exist online. Rather than only competing for search rankings, we made an unconventional bet and built our presence specifically so AI engines would understand and recommend us.

Here's what that produced:

A client booked a call with us and told us he found us through ChatGPT. We asked how he found us, as we ask everyone. The answer was an AI recommendation — the model named us to a complete stranger, and he became a client without ever seeing an ad.

Four separate AI systems now name our agency. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI, and Meta AI — including first-position recommendations. These are different companies running different models, which matters: it means the signals about our business on the open web are strong enough that independent systems reach the same conclusion.

We can see it in the data. Google Search Console now reports AI performance separately, and our analytics show referral traffic arriving directly from ChatGPT.

We are not describing a theory we read about. We are describing something we built, measured, and closed business from — in the same niche we build it for you in.

Almost every agency writing about AEO right now is explaining a concept. We're reporting a result.

What Actually Makes AI Recommend a Contractor?

There's no published algorithm, and anyone claiming certainty is guessing. But across our own results and the work we do for clients, a consistent set of signals matters.

Ai Recommend A Contractor
Reviews Carry Weight

Reviews carry more weight than most contractors expect. When an AI decides which businesses to name, review volume, recency, and rating are heavily weighted. A contractor with thirty recent reviews is a far safer recommendation for a model than one with six from three years ago. This is the highest-leverage item on this list and the one most contractors skip.

Your business has to be categorizable in one sentence. Models need to confidently know what you do and who you serve before they'll name you. Vague positioning — "full-service home solutions" — is genuinely a liability here. A contractor whose site plainly states they do kitchen and bathroom remodeling for homeowners in a specific region is far easier for a model to recommend than one hiding behind branding language.

Business definition in two lines
local business omnipresence

Omnipresence matters more than any single placement. AI models build confidence about a business by seeing it repeatedly across unrelated sources — your website, your Google profile, directories, social platforms, industry sites, community discussions, video content, press mentions. A contractor who exists in one place with a great website is easier to overlook than one who shows up consistently in twenty different corners of the internet. It isn't about being everywhere for its own sake; it's that repetition across independent sources is what makes a model confident enough to name you rather than hedge. Businesses with a single point of presence are structurally easier for these systems to skip.

Consistency across the web matters more than volume. Same business name, same description, same address and phone everywhere you appear. Models cross-reference sources, and contradictions make them less confident. Two different phone numbers across your listings quietly costs you.

Available on every web
Third-party mentions outweigh

Third-party mentions outweigh what you say about yourself. Being cited on sites you don't own — directories, publications, industry sites, community discussions — carries more weight than your own marketing copy. AI engines pull heavily from platforms like Reddit and YouTube alongside conventional sources.

Content that answers real questions gets pulled into answers. Pages structured around the questions homeowners actually ask, answered directly rather than in marketing language, are what these systems extract from. Structured data helps a model parse who and what you are.

Content that answers real questions
Beyond Google

Beyond Google. ChatGPT's live lookups have historically leaned on Bing's index, and voice assistants pull from Apple Maps. Most contractors have optimized one platform and ignored the others. Claiming those listings takes very little time and closes a gap almost nobody has closed.

How Do You Know If Your Business Is Invisible to AI?

Test it yourself, right now. It takes two minutes and you don't need us.

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini and ask the way a homeowner would: "Who's the best kitchen remodeler in [your city]?" Then try variations — "best painting contractor near [city]," "who should I hire to remodel my bathroom in [city]," "top remodeling companies in [city]."

Watch what happens. Are you named? Are you named consistently across different phrasings, or only one? Are you first, or third? Which competitors are named instead of you?

That's your baseline, and it costs nothing. Most contractors have never run this test and have no idea they're absent from a channel their competitors are already appearing in.

Then check whether AI is already sending you traffic. Google Search Console now reports AI performance separately, and your analytics will show referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Many contractors are receiving AI traffic already without realizing it — and can't tell whether it's growing because nobody's tracking it.

How Long Does AEO Take?

Faster than traditional SEO, slower than paid ads — and honestly, less predictable than either.

Some signals move quickly. Fixing inconsistent business information, claiming overlooked listings, and adding structured content can shift visibility within weeks. Others compound slowly — review accumulation, third-party mentions, and content authority build over months.

There's an honest limitation here worth naming: AI models get retrained, and their recommendations can shift without warning or explanation. Being named today doesn't guarantee being named next month. That's why AEO isn't a one-time project — it's a position you maintain, the same way you maintain rankings.

Any agency promising you guaranteed AI placement by a specific date is promising something nobody can control.

What Happens After AI Recommends You?

This is where most AEO conversations stop, and it's where the money is actually won or lost.

Getting named is only half of it. A homeowner who was handed your name by an AI arrives warm — the recommendation did your credibility work for you — but they're still a lead who has to be answered. If they fill out your form at nine on a Sunday evening and nobody responds until Tuesday morning, that AI recommendation produced nothing except a competitor's job.

We build both halves. AEO gets your business named. Our AI booking system responds to every inquiry within one second — day, night, weekend — qualifies the homeowner conversationally, and books the consultation directly into your calendar.

That combination is the point. An AI recommendation is the warmest introduction your business can get — the homeowner arrives already believing you're a credible choice. But that advantage evaporates the moment the follow-up is slow. A homeowner handed three names contacts whoever responds first, and the recommendation you spent months earning quietly becomes a competitor's booked job.

Frequently asked questions

Why Yavi Media for AEO?

We work exclusively with painting and remodeling contractors. Most agencies offering AEO serve HVAC, roofing, plumbing, and half a dozen other trades on the same playbook. We do two trades, deeply.

We've proven it on ourselves. We're not describing a service we read about — we built our own AI visibility from nothing, we're named by four separate engines, and we've closed business that came directly from an AI recommendation. Ask any other agency to show you their own results.

We're honest about what's unknown. This field is new. Nobody has it fully solved, including us. We'll tell you what we're confident about, what we're testing, and what nobody can promise — because you'll find out eventually anyway, and we'd rather you hear it from us.

We connect AEO to booked jobs. Visibility that doesn't convert is a vanity metric. Our system carries the homeowner from AI recommendation to a confirmed appointment on your calendar.

One contractor per city. We never build AI visibility for two competitors in the same market.
